Using uncompressed drum samples is really the domain of those
that can spot the potential in samples. Rarely
do thin ears spot this potential, and this is the reason why over-
compressed sounds are peddled by most rap music production sites, and successfully so, I would add. Compression
is basically the process of inflating the volume of the quiet parts of a sound sample so the
space between the highpoints and lowpoints (
vis volume ) is lessened.
Compression on drum samples can come into your workflow at 2 stages.
The 1st is the drum sample selection process. This is where you
will find the examples that were appropriately
compressed by the library manufacturer, and
with a little bit of luck not very compressed.
One of some compression methods for
drum samples is the NY compression effect. In essence, it's achieved by combining an original
sample with the same sample heavily compressed. Having both allows
the volume to be maximised while the dynamics are not
totally reduced.
