Sharing a story my daughter (Laia Ector, 11) wrote after seeing some devastation over Georgia Pass...

---

Hello. My name is Laia Ector. I am 11 years old now. My parents and I decided to go camping on 2023, July 8. We went to Georgia Pass. We’ve been there before, and its stunning. The trees climb tall, moose graze the prairies, and birds sing lullabies. Beautiful sparkling lakes shone like a star in the night sky. We always found adventures and new sights every time we go there. But when drove there, something changed.

Fallen trees and uprooted rocks, mountains of dug-up gravel ‘greeted’ us. Campsites that we loved were blocked with massive logs and as I said, rocks and gravel. This only means one thing. Excavators were there. They have been told by their insane boss to dig up places that were used for hiking and camping. People shared memories here. They had good times with friends. They watched the wildlife. Georgia pass was a place to go to get away from screens and connect with nature. If people want to tent, camp, or hang outside, they need to search no farther! It used to be a new world. But not anymore. This was very upsetting.

Animals are losing their homes. They are forced to leave this once called paradise! Some are endangered species! But does the guy in charge care? NO! Not even a little bit. When we hiked today, at least for a whole mile was this mess of roots pulled out, dead trees, and rocks making it impossible to go there in your car!

If he doesn’t want us to be there, why does he have to this for an entire mile?! One fallen tree would do the trick. Even better, place a gate there! My dad told me it takes longer in high altitude for trees to grow. That means he cut down trees that are 50 years old! Some are even ancient! Even worse is, he is blocking mines made long ago. Why is that bad, you ask? It’s part of Colorado history! It’s part of our history! See for yourself if you don’t believe me.

I’m worried he’ll destroy too much and they’ll build buildings here. People engulfed in their electronic devices, completely forgetting about the wonderful outdoors. If there is no place to hike, camp, tent, etc., no one would play outside, or even touch grass. We use the outdoors to get away from screens. We would not care to look outside because houses are surrounding us.   Also, animals would leave Colorado. Do you really want that?

We are known for our hiking places. We are known for our fantastic animals. We are known for the great outdoors. We are known for our mountains, and Georgia Pass was a different universe from Colorado, or even yet, most of our country.  But this worm brain is completely throwing that feeling away. So that is why we need your help. We need all the help we can get to stop this psychopath. Please, send complaints to protect the wildlife we have and mend this wound. I bet you, he won’t stop. #savegeorgiapass! Join the club!
