Robotic Cancer Treatment Center Announces Operational Highlights, Celebrates Eighth Year in Colorado

• Over 4,500 CyberKnife treatments have been performed
• More than 1,500 patients from 35 different states have been treated
• Approximately 20% of patients have come from outside Boulder Community Hospital’s service area, including patients from as far as Vermont and Massachusetts
• Equipment upgrades have been made which feature increased dose rate capabilities, enabling enhanced calculations of radiation doses for customized treatment plans, and increased control of the radiation beam size, further reducing treatment times and protecting more healthy tissue 
• Diseases most often treated include: brain tumors and lesions, lung tumors and lesions and trigeminal neuralgia, a nerve disorder that causes excruciating, electroshock-like pain throughout the face. Brain tumors and lesions represent the largest number of caseloads with about 74% of treatments falling into this category.
• Radiation oncologist Dr. Tyler Kemmis recently joined the physician team, expanding the number of doctors certified and trained to treat patients with CyberKnife

“We’ve been treating patients for nearly a decade and believe CyberKnife represents one of the most precise technologies in radiation therapy today with excellent outcomes and minimal side effects,” said Dr. Lee McNeely, a radiation oncologist with Rocky Mountain CyberKnife. “I’ve treated patients with CyberKnife since this technology was first introduced in Colorado and am proud of the extensive clinical expertise we can offer our patients,” said McNeely.
 
CyberKnife treats cancerous and benign tumors in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas and prostate through a process called stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic radiotherapy, a noninvasive method of treating tumors with high-dose radiation precisely aimed from different angles. The result is greatly increased accuracy that spares healthy tissue. Treatments are complete in one to five treatment sessions.
