17-year-old kids are not equipped to make financial decisions that will alter the course of their lives for years to come. In America, however, this is unfortunately the norm as millions of high schoolers choose to take out student loans to pay for their college tuition without fully grasping the implications of this decision on their later lives.

My name is Katie and I very recently married my best friend, Joel. We met at Pepperdine University, where we had a great experience, but unfortunately also accumulated over $200,000 in student loan debt between the two of us. While we are both grateful for the time we spent at Pepperdine and the people we met, we both agree that our 17-year-old selves did not fully understand that we would be placing our future selves in crippling debt.

I work a remote job and my husband is currently in the job search – applying to 20+ jobs per day, but still being turned down despite his Pepperdine degree. Once he finds a full-time job, we both will most likely also have to pick up a part-time minimum wage job to stay afloat and meet our monthly student loan payments totaling a little over $3,000. We are actively doing everything we can, but are still suffering under the stress and financial burden of our student loans.

We understand that our own poor financial decisions are the reason we are in such significant debt, but are still hoping to find some support and debt relief through our GoFundMe page. Any amount would help us!

Thank you so much!
