Sacred Heart of Jesus 5th grade students reenact the Stations of the Cross

As part of the Easter and Holy Week celebration, the Sacred Heart of Jesus 5th grade students performed a living Stations of the Cross. Under the guidance of parent volunteer Julie Bala and teachers Kathy DuBois and Laura Weeden the students brought to life Jesus' last hours on earth. The children, narrating each of the 14 stations, related a modern day tale of personal hardship, turning your back on a friend or bullying to each of the sufferings Jesus endured on that day. The purpose of this… Continue

From John F. Kennedy to Sitting Bull to Marie Curie, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School 3rd grade students took on new identities and hosted the second annual wax museum on Friday, April 25th. Mrs. Angela Cunningham and Mrs. Amy Edward's third grade classes have been studying historical events, inventions and people that have changed the world for the better. They believe social studies can not simply be read about; it must be experienced in order to allow each child to gain a deeper understanding of the past and the world around us. This in turn will help the students become more actively involved citizens.

This unique and interactive educational approach combines social studies with creative writing development and a little bit of acting. With the help of the History Maker Biographies Series, each student read about a historical figure, answering various questions and taking notes; all this in preparation for a written report using The Six Traits of Writing. Sacred Heart of Jesus School believes writing is such a crucial skill at every grade. So these third graders used their creative talents to construct papers filled with colorful words and detailed sentences in order to excite the reader.

To round out the learning experience, students used wooden spoons to design doll replicas of the people they studied. The wax museum was the culminating activity centered around the importance of bringing history alive. The entire school joined in this opportunity to stroll through history and view the "statues".
