Boulder's first apple press for hard cider in 100 years?

BOCO Cider, Boulder's only cidery, pressed over 4,500 lbs. of local apples on Sept. 21, the Fall Equinox.  It may be Boulder County's first significant press for hard cider in 100 Years!

  • The apples were collected from residential trees in Boulder County with community help.
  • The apples were milled first and then pressed in North Boulder.
  • The juice is a “Mutt” blend owing to the many varieties used.
  • The resulting 350 gallons will be fermented, keg conditioned and ready to pour in about 6 weeks.

Once upon a time, Boulder County had a thriving apple industry with about two thirds devoted to the production of hard cider.  Prohibition (1920 to 1933) wiped out the hard cider industry and major apple production moved to Washington and other states.  NPR's "Science Friday" did a great segment from Chautauqua on local apples: https://www.sciencefriday.com/segments/colorado-apple-mystery/

BOCO Cider is a small urban cider located in North Boulder.  Its hard cider is “Made the Boulder Way,” which means no added sulfites, unfiltered, nothing artificial, natural bubbles, unpasteurized and gluten-free!  Kind of like it would have been made on a farm a century ago.
