Abstract. This presentation provides an overview of Shamanism and includes an experiential exercise in drumming and receiving information. Shamanism is an ancient practice for healing and understanding the world. Classical shamanism recognizes two realities: ordinary reality, which is our normal waking consciousness of consensual reality, and non-ordinary reality. Spirits are in non-ordinary reality in the upper, middle, and lower worlds. The shaman communicates with wise, compassionate spirits in these worlds to receive information and provide the power for healing. Shamans work in an altered state of consciousness brought on by steady drumming. The session includes an experiential exercise involving drumming and a journey to a favorite place in nature to find out which of our five normal and other lesser-known senses serve as our best channels for receiving information.
