Event Description

BOULDER’S TOP STORYTELLERS FACE OFF IN GRAND SLAM at ETOWN HALL

“Truth Be Told” story slam kicks off its third year with all-star storytelling, musical talent.

Truth Be Told, Boulder’s story slam, will kick off their third season with an All-Star Grand Slam, featuring the winning storytellers from 2014, on Sunday, February 22, 6:30 pm at eTown Hall, 1535 Spruce Street in Boulder.

Truth Be Told is a storytelling competition that is loosely patterned after the popular “Moth” story slams. Audience members who wish to tell a 5-minute, true life story on the evening’s pre-determined theme are invited to put their names in a hat and ten lucky storytellers come to the stage to tell their story. Teams of audience judges score the stories, and there is a winner for each slam. The Grand Slam event at eTown is the culmination of our second year of hosting story slams. Truth Be Told sold out all shows in 2014.

“Our audiences reminded us repeatedly that we had outgrown our venue in the “gathering place” of Shine Restaurant,” co-host Johanna Walker says. “So we’re giving eTown a try. It’s a good problem to have.”

The storytelling lineup for the February 22nd slam is: Lindsay Bourgoine, Michael Mathieu, Glenna Murdock, Morley McBride,Ted Weaver, Eryc Eyl (a.k.a. DJ SaviorBreath), writer Ellen Nordberg, professional speaker Traci Brown, and award-winning actor Jim Walker.

Truth Be Told hosts Nina Rolle and Johanna Walker are Boulder-based performing artists who host in their own, unique style. From spoken word, to comedy improvisation, one-line stories, to musical medleys, Rolle and Walker work with the evening’s theme across disciplines and provide the backbone of this event. As hosts, their chemistry is compelling.

“If you haven’t been to the Truth Be Told story slam, I highly recommend it! It’s the best entertainment I’ve seen in Boulder in a long time. Raw art and human condition rolled up into incredible laughter and art from Johanna Walker and Nina Rolle,” says Myka McLaughlin, a Truth Be Told regular.

Rolle enlists local musicians to play medleys on the pre-determined theme, while Walker comically interrupts these songs with one- or two-line stories from her own life.

“We encourage clever engagement with the theme,” Rolle says. “So we take on the challenge ourselves, by working with the theme across a variety of artistic disciplines.”

Rolle is a voiceover actor, performance artist and musician known locally for her original, award-winning show, ZEN CABARET: a contemplative burlesque. Walker, a speaker and coach, is the owner of Big, Bold, True & You public speaking coaching.

TRUTH BE TOLD: Boulder’s Bi-Monthly Story Slam will be held on Sunday February 22 at eTown Hall, 1535 13th St, in Boulder. Doors open at 5:30pm; with light refreshments. Show starts 6:30pm. Tickets, $22 & $45 can be purchased in advance at
