SEEDing the Dream

Helping low-income youth reach their career ambitions through meaningful work experiences

Leadership Boulder County, a program through the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, works to give its thirty to forty participants a comprehensive view of civic leadership, involvement, and opportunities. This year, one group in the program has used its required community project to create a new “SEEDING the Dream” Summer Internship Program. This is a newly established partnership with the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County and WorkForce Boulder County’s S.E.E.D. program (Student Employment and Enterprise Development) along with the Leadership Boulder County group. The program’s primary goal is to provide the low-income youth involved with “I Have a Dream” valuable and meaningful work experiences.
The “SEEDING the Dream” program is building on the long-term CU Internship Program that “I Have a Dream” has benefitted from over the past thirteen years. CU has sponsored six-week paid internships in various departments across campus where Dreamers have gained valuable job skills. The partnership created with the S.E.E.D program will allow for funding for additional positions both at CU and elsewhere, such as the Boulder Community Hospital. Currently, students are also being placed with ten departments at CU, including the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, the Office of Labor Relations, and the Student Academic Services Center.
