Family Learning Center to Honor John Tayer with 2009 Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award

Awards Dinner and Auction to be Held Friday September 11, at CU’s Stadium Club

The Family Learning Center, a Boulder non-profit dedicated to encouraging successful lifelong learning and economic self-sufficiency for families of diverse cultures and limited incomes, is pleased to announce that John Tayer is the recipient of its 2009 Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award.

Tayer was selected for this honor based on his outstanding contributions to the Boulder community. He will receive the award at The Family learning Center’s 15th annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Awards Dinner and Auction on Friday, September 11 at the Stadium Club at CU’s Folson Field in Boulder.

A 29-year resident of Boulder, Tayer is currently the Director of Public Affairs and Communication for the Roche Colorado Corporation, a Boulder-based pharmaceutical company. Tayer serves as the elected representative from the Boulder area to the Regional Transportation District (RTD) Board of Directors, where he has fought to keep the Ecopass accessible and affordable and ensured that Boulder residents receive the promised investments in commuter rail and bus rapid transit. Tayer is also Board Chair for the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, a Board Member for Eco-Cyle, the local non-profit recycling agency, and sits on the community advisory board for Avista Hospital.

A native of Brookline, Massachusetts, John earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the University of Colorado.

The annual Penfield Tate Humanitarian Award was created by The Family Learning Center to honor the memory and legacy of the late Penfield Tate, a former mayor of Boulder and civil rights lawyer.
