American Avocets are so very elegant, and this image shows it, as this beautiful bird strides across the pond. The water level was very low at the edges, which is perfect for Avocets in spring time, because they like to mate in the shallow water, and also it helps them find food.

Hi Emily,

I guess you could say I'm a semi-pro because I do sell my photography. My website is www.judiphotography.com

One tip is to have patience. Often when you go somewhere, the birds will fly away, but if you wait, they will often come back. Another tip is to get down low. This pic was taken with me lying down; not the most comfortable position, but if you can be at eye level with your subject, you will have better photos. Also, go early in the morning! I almost always get to the place where I'm shooting at sunrise. That early light will give you so much more beautiful photos!

where did you get this photo. Also what lens did you use and settings? I am a budding photographer and I am shotting with a Nikion DSLR D5300.

Also how do you figure out how much to charge for your photos as I have some that I would like to sell my stuff but I just don't have an idea on a starting price. Any help I would love.

Locations are jusually carefully guarded secrets, so I can't tell you where I took that photo. But look for small lakes and ponds, where the birds can't get too far away from you. In big lakes, they can swim away quickly and then they're too far to photograph.

As far as prices, take a look at a variety of websites of photographers who are selling their work. Prices are all over the map. Since you are a beginner, you might start at the lower end. Galleries will typically take 50% plus charge you an additional fee plus sometimes volunteer time, so in that case, you'll want to price you work higher accordingly.
